Guess Who’s in “The Stranger” Again

One of my friends discovered this ad in this week’s edition of The Stranger newspaper in Seattle. It features a stock image of myself (one of the primary images I use for my music persona, Fugdale) which was photographed by Rasmus Rasmussen. This is the second time in a month that one of my photos has showed up in The Stranger.

I wonder if I can show up at this Primo place and get free cocktails.

SEATTLE, WA (March 11, 2011) – ArtsWest Playhouse & Gallery is proud to announce the Seattle Premiere of Shipwrecked! An Entertainment, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Donald Margulies (Dinner with Friends, Collected Stories), directed by ArtsWest’s Theater and Education Director Christopher Zinovitch (The History Boys, Evil Dead: The Musical). Shipwrecked! opens on Wednesday, April 27th and runs through Saturday, May 21, 2011 at ArtsWest (4711 California Ave SW, Seattle 98116).

Shipwrecked! is based on the tales of Louis de Rougemont, a hoaxer who spellbound 19th-century readers with his adventures as a castaway in the South Pacific—until it was revealed that his accounts of buried treasure, a giant killer octopus and cannibals were likely, in fact, fictional. In the book’s afterword, Margulies wrote that with Shipwrecked! he wanted to create “a play that would make no attempt to replicate onstage what television and movies do but would instead celebrate the uniqueness of theater.”

With his “exuberantly theatrical” (Time Out New York) piece, Margulies strips away the trappings of spectacle—using minimal scenery, three players and the simple sound effects they create—to, as Margulies said, “get back to what theater does best: enlighten, amuse, transport, make you forget, or force you to remember.”

Donald Margulies received the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Dinner with Friends, which has been produced across the U.S. and around the world. His other plays include Sight Unseen (Obie Award for Best New American Play); Brooklyn Boy; Collected Stories; God of Vengeance, based on the Yiddish classic; among many others. Born in Brooklyn, he lives in New Haven, Connecticut, with his wife and his son, to whom the play is dedicated.

Doug Fahl (South Pacific- Village Theatre; The Great Gatsby-Seattle Repertory Theatre; Zombies of Mass Destruction-Lionsgate Films) leads the ensemble cast as Louis de Rougemont in ArtsWest’s production of Shipwrecked! Also featured are Beth A. Cooper (Black Gold, Measure for Pleasure), Nick Edwards (The History Boys), and Emily Rose Frasca (Evil Dead: The Musical, 2010 BWW Award for Best Actress in a Musical).

Christopher Zinovitch (Winner, 2010 Broadway World Awards, Best Direction of a Musical) will direct Shipwrecked! alongside his design team: Dan Schuy (set and props), Rob Witmer (sound), Margo Walker (costumes), and Josh Randall (lights). Zinovitch piloted the hugely successful Evil Dead: The Musical last fall and the currently-running production of Distracted, now playing at ArtsWest through April 2nd.

Winner of Broadway World’s Best Theater of the Year (2010), ArtsWest is one of Seattle’s leading not-for-profit contemporary theater companies. The 149-seat theater and visual arts gallery took home another sixteen Broadway World Awards for 2010 including Best Musical, Best Costume Design, and Best Choreography. Doug to play title role in upcoming play at ArtsWest in Seattle

Doug has been cast and contracted to play the title role of Louis de Rougemont in ArtsWest’s upcoming production of “Shipwrecked! The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont as Told By Himself”. The play, written by Donald Margulies and directed by Christopher Zinovitch opens April 27th and runs through May 21st at ArtsWest Theatre in West Seattle.

In Shipwrecked! An Entertainment, four performers enact a dazzling adventure tale using the simple magic of the theater. In tones somewhere between storybook narrator and sideshow barker, a middle-aged charmer named Louis de Rougemont unfolds a tale of sailing to a South Seas paradise to dive for pearls, evade monsters of the deep, and survive for decades among the natives. Three other actors not only play all the remaining roles, from a crusty sea captain to a trusty dog, they also create a world of live sound effects that bring the globe-spanning story to life. Written by the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Collected Stories and Dinner with Friends, this raucous fantasy challenges audiences to think about the delicate dance between truth and fiction – are the lives we lead enough to make a mark on the world, and in the grand scheme of things, does that matter?

Doug cast in feature film ‘The Dead Men’.

Doug has been cast as Detective Tufts, a supporting role in an independent feature film called “The Dead Men”. The film is produced by Serius Films in Seattle. More information about the film will be released as it is made public. Production on the project will take place in February.

Doug featured in voiceover version of upcoming film “SCAPEGOAT”

Doug recently spent 3 days in the sound studio at the Seattle Art Institute recording a voice over version of a new film by Chris Julian entitled “Scapegoat”. The film retells the story of Jesus and Judas in a totally unique way. Doug played the “Jesus” character (named Joshua in the film). Chris Julian is creating an audio version of the movie to help generate backing and revenue for the full feature film. The audio version won’t be released publicly.

Doug cast in Kevin Hamedani’s latest film “JUNK”

Doug will be appearing in a cameo role alongside a few other “Zombies of Mass Destruction” actors in Kevin Hamedani’s newest film titled “JUNK”. Details of the film haven’t been publicly released yet. So check back for more information as it becomes available. The film is being shot this month in Seattle, WA. Doug will be playing a karaoke host in the film. ”JUNK” is Hamedani’s second feature film.

Doug performing in “It Should Have Been You” at Village Theater

Doug will play Morty and a waiter in an upcoming staged reading of a new musical called “It Should Have Been You”. The reading will show one night only at 7:30pm on Thursday, August 12th as part of Village Theater’s “Annual Festival of New Works”. The new musical, by Brian Hargrove and Barabara Anselmi, follows a bride on the day of her wedding when crazy things happen. The festival includes six original new musicals and runs from August 12th-August 15th at Village Theater in Issaquah.

Here is a brief summary of the show:

“What begins as a typical wedding, replete with indecisive mothers and jealous siblings, escalates to new levels of hysteria in this outrageous new musical comedy. As dissatisfied mothers fire snide comments at one another and ex-boyfriends make unsolicited appearances, arguments arise and secrets unfurl. With an uproarious score, It Shoulda Been You is a rollercoaster of laughs full of shocking twists that will leave your head spinning.”

Doug has been cast as Brian, a patient of a concerned doctor who wants to have his Oxycontin prescription filled early. This training video by Talaria will help train doctors in how to deal with patients who are showing signs of addiction to the medications they are prescribed. This project includes several case scenarios. Doug’s project includes a voice over with still slides to be shown on a private medical site. Sorry folks, you need to be a doctor to see the final project. Shooting will be held in mid August.

Short Film Starring Doug Makes World Premiere at STIFF ’10

A Measure of Comfort, a 37-minute short dramatic film directed by Jeremy Berg, makes it’s world premiere at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival (STIFF) on Saturday, June 12th at 7:45pm. Doug plays supporting character, Jack, a husband who has to cope with his wife’s infidelities. A Measure of Comfort tells the story of a struggling writer wrestling with his changed perception of the world after a doomed relationship draws to a conclusion.
